Former Pussycat Dolls lead singer Nicole Scherzinger took a moment to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela during the Cosmopolitan Woman of the Year Awards in London on Thursday (Dec. 5), just hours after his death.
While accepting her award for the Ultimate TV Personality for her role as a judge on Britain's The X Factor, the pop/soul beauty sang a moving rendition of “This Little Light of Mine,” honoring the late civil rights icon.
“When I found out that Mr. Nelson Mandela had passed away… it brought a tear to my eye,” Scherzinger told the audience. “I had the honor of meeting Mr. Nelson Mandela and had the great honor singing for him.”
Scherzinger performed the song at Mandela’s 90th birthday party.
She also took to Twitter to voice her condolences: "God Bless @NelsonMandela Tears stream as it was an honor to have known u. / U were truly exceptional & an inspiration. (sic)"
Mandela passed away at his home in Johannesburg, South Africa.
