Rihanna continues to pile on accolades in her illustrious career.
The 25-year-old will me bestowed the inaugural Icon Award at the upcoming American Music Awards, the night’s biggest honor, reports the LA Times.
“The first-ever Icon Award was created to honor an artist whose body of work has made a profound influence over pop music on a global level,” show producer Larry Klein said. “Rihanna’s iconic and innovative sound has enabled her to become one of the most influential and bestselling artists of all time.”
In addition to the honor, Rihanna has received four nominations for the upcoming ceremony.
Many may argue that it’s too early for the pop star to receive an “Icon” award, but with seven successful albums in seven years, this puts her in a category with some of today’s legends. In addition, she’s sold 50 million albums and 180 million singles worldwide, making her the best-selling digital artist of all time.
Rihanna will also join the lineup of performers for the night which includes TLC, Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, Kendrick Lamar, Luke Bryan, Lady Gaga, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Miley Cyrus, Florida Georgia Line, Ke$ha, Imagine Dragons, One Direction and this year’s host Pitbull.
The American Music Awards will air live from the Nokia Theatre on Nov. 24 at 8 p.m., except on the West Coast where it will be tape-delayed.
