Usher has been named in a new copyright infringement lawsuit for allegedly sampling a 1960s R&B hit without permission.
According to a lawsuit filed in a U.S. District Court in Illinois, owners at Twilight Records and Syl-Zel Music claim the R&B crooner along with Mark Wahlberg, Run D.M.C, and other artists used segments from Syl Johnson's 1967 song “Different Strokes” illegally. Record labels Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group was also named in the suit.
The complaint seeks accounting, along with a permanent restraint against sampling the song, and unspecified damages.
Johnson’s publisher previously sued Kanye West and Jay Z for improper sampling of a song on their ‘Watch the Throne’ album. The suit was later settled.
