Dawn Robinson On EnVogue: ‘They Didn’t Want To Fight’

Dawn Robinson says one of the reasons EnVogue fell apart is because the other group members didn't want to fight for their just due.

"What was worse is that the girls in my group didn't want to fight to make it better… I was the only one saying 'hey, this isn't right'. I just was fearless. I had a lot of courage," Robinson shared in a recent interview.

According to Robinson, while there were a lot of issues, the fact that they were making just pennies per album, didn't sit well at all.

"Two pennies per album. It was a joke because we were huge," Robinson shares with CocoaFab in video below. "I just thought we're doing all the work and they're (music execs) making all the profits."

You may remember Dawn Robinson as one of the original members of the iconic R&B group, EnVogue. But did you know that she left the group due to issues with management and creative differences?

In a recent interview, Robinson opened up about her experiences in EnVogue and shed light on the challenges faced by women in the music industry. Robinson revealed that while being a part of EnVogue was an amazing experience, it wasn’t without its struggles.

The pressures placed on women in the music industry can be immense, from managers pushing for certain looks or sounds to record labels wanting to control every aspect of an artist’s career. Despite these challenges, Robinson remained determined to stand up for herself and her artistic vision.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at Robinson’s experiences with EnVogue and how she navigated through an industry that often pits artists against each other in order to maintain control.

The Challenges Faced by Women in the Music Industry

You’re constantly struggling to prove yourself as a woman in the music industry, facing discrimination and barriers at every turn. Despite your talent and hard work, it always feels like you have to work twice as hard as your male counterparts just to be taken seriously. This is especially true when it comes to getting recognition for your songwriting abilities or being given leadership roles within your band.

One of the biggest challenges faced by women in the music industry is the way they are often treated as objects rather than musicians. This can manifest itself in many ways, from being pressured into wearing revealing outfits on stage to being expected to put up with inappropriate behavior from male colleagues or fans. It’s incredibly frustrating and demoralizing when people don’t take you seriously because of your gender, rather than judging you based on your actual skills and abilities.

Another issue that many female musicians face is a lack of support from their peers or even their own bandmates. As Dawn Robinson of En Vogue has stated, there can be a real reluctance among women in bands to stand up for themselves or fight for what they deserve. This can make it even harder for individual women to make progress within the industry, since they may feel isolated and unsupported by those around them.

Overall, it’s clear that there are many obstacles that women must overcome if they want to succeed as musicians. Despite these challenges, so many talented women continue to push forward and make their voices heard.

Standing Up for Yourself in the Face of Industry Pressures

Facing industry pressures can be tough, but don’t let anyone make you compromise your values or beliefs. As a woman in the music industry, you may feel like you constantly have to prove yourself or conform to certain standards set by those in power. However, it’s important to remember that standing up for yourself and what you believe in is crucial for your success and well-being.

One way to stand up for yourself is by being assertive and setting boundaries. Don’t be afraid to say no when something doesn’t align with your goals or values. It’s also important to communicate clearly with those around you about what you will and won’t tolerate. Remember, it’s okay to advocate for yourself and take control of your own career.

It can also be helpful to find a support system within the industry. Surrounding yourself with people who understand the challenges you face as a woman can provide a sense of community and empowerment. With a strong support system behind you, it becomes easier to stand firm in your convictions and push back against any pressure that may come your way.

Ultimately, staying true to yourself will help you build a successful career while maintaining integrity and authenticity.

Conclusion

So there you have it, standing up for yourself in the music industry can be tough, especially as a woman. But as Dawn Robinson of EnVogue points out, sometimes it’s the only way to ensure your own success and happiness.

It’s important to remember that you don’t have to take any mistreatment or unfairness lying down. If you ever find yourself in a situation where someone is trying to silence you or hold you back, speak up and fight for what you deserve.

At the end of the day, being true to yourself and your values is what matters most. Don’t let anyone else dictate what kind of artist or person you should be.

Stay strong and persevere through any obstacles that come your way – because ultimately, that’s what will make you stand out from the crowd and achieve greatness in this industry.
