HAPPY BIRTHDAY: 10 Reasons Prince is an Icon

Prince Rogers Nelson, know to the world as his mononym Prince, was born on June 7, 1958 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He had a calling for music at an early age, writing his first song at age seven, but struggled to get heard before releasing his debut album, For You, in 1978. Fast forward to today, and over 100 million records sold worldwide, Prince is still making legendary moves, all while controlling his own ship.

When Billboard anointed him with this year's Icon Award, fans around the world were all in agreement. In the past, artists such as Stevie Wonder and Neil Diamond, have won the award so the crafter of both “Purple Rain” and “Kiss” fit right in.

As we wish this legend a Happy 55th Birthday, here are 10 reason why he's our icon.

He’s still releasing music. Prince by no means needs to continue making music to stay relevant but it’s still nice that he does. A true craftsman never gives up on his craft and the passion he has today for his music is the same as it was when he first came on the seen over 30 years ago.

He’s a jack-of-all-trades. This velvety singer doesn’t just bless the masses with his vocals, he both also writes and produces. Your name will always be in someone’s mouth if you’ve got the game sewn up from both sides.

He’s a special edition. There will never be another Prince in the same way there will never be a Michael Jackson or a Whitney Houston. Despite only being 55 years old, Prince has lived long enough to see how his music changed an industry.

He’s unapologetic. In 2010, Prince told the Mirror “The Internet’s completely over” and while we are now in 2013 and can see just how false that statement is, Prince has never retracted it. He has however, released a new website (20pr1nc3.com).

He’s got the numbers to back him up. Prince has won 7 Grammys, sold over 100 million records worldwide, produced ten platinum albums and thirty Top 40 singles.

He’s regal. Purple is the color of royalty and Prince claimed dibbs on the color quite a while ago. Can’t blame him. He does look pretty darn good in purple.

He’s sexy, exuding “impossible sex appeal for all persuasions,” as the Los Angeles Times describes it.

He’s fashionable. What other male in the music industry could be all of the fashion that Prince does? Kanye and Lil Wayne may try and push the envelope every once in a while but we can bet they’d fall flat on their faces in a pair of Prince’s heels.

He starred in his own biopic. Now that’s sick.

He was destined for greatness. The word prince by definition means monarch or ruler and he’s been known to rule the music scene. His parents must have had some kind of inclining about his future profession when they named him.
