Prince Rogers Nelson, know to the world as his mononym Prince, was born on June 7, 1958 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He had a calling for music at an early age, writing his first song at age seven, but struggled to get heard before releasing his debut album, For You, in 1978. Fast forward to today, and over 100 million records sold worldwide, Prince is still making legendary moves, all while controlling his own ship.
When Billboard anointed him with this year's Icon Award, fans around the world were all in agreement. In the past, artists such as Stevie Wonder and Neil Diamond, have won the award so the crafter of both “Purple Rain” and “Kiss” fit right in.
As we wish this legend a Happy 55th Birthday, here are 10 reason why he's our icon.
