Mary J. Blige, Solange Knowles, Pharrell Williams and more came out in support of women at Glamour magazine’s annual “Women of the Year” celebration Monday night.
Honoring some of this year’s movers and shakers, including Olympic medalists, like Gabrielle Douglas, the event was also to promote the mag’s December 2012 issue.
“This year’s issue has a whole other layer of greatness: Women made the whole thing. Yes, our December 2012 issue is a women’s-photography spectacular-every photo commissioned for this issue was taken by a woman. (Think that’s no big deal? In a typical issue of a fashion magazine, just 18 percent of commissioned work goes to women, and while Glamour averages twice that, the bulk of our assignments, I was dismayed to discover, still go to men. Not cool-especially in a year when we are honoring the fantastic Annie Leibovitz as a Woman of the Year!) With the exception of photos we got from stock agencies, wire services, or the two roving street-style photographers who shoot for us throughout the year, every image in the issue’s 264 pages is by a woman, from art superstars to Instagrammers,” reports Glamour.
Selena Gomez, Zaha Hadid, Lena Dunham, Ethel Kennedy and Erin Merryn are among this year’s notable honorees.
