Is Rihanna’s new single failing to connect with music listeners? The song made a strong debut on the Billboard Hot 100 and Digital Songs chart this week, but fell well below promoted projections.
As previously reported, “Diamonds” debuted to much fanfare and was projected to move 200,000 copies first week. According to Billboard, the song instead debuted with 133,000 copies sold and a no.16 debut on the Hot 100.
While the song is something different for Rihanna, which most would request (she has to evolve over time), was it the right move?
Looking back, Rihanna’s massive single “We Found Love” debuted in a similar frame last year thanks to 117,000 copies sold. It shot straight to no.1 a week later, beginning a 10-week reign on the chart. As we now know, “We Found Love” became the biggest single from her album “Talk That Talk.” With a strong music video and a little time could “Diamonds” do the same ?
