About a year ago R. Kelly proclaimed “Black Panties” would be the next “12 Play,” but we haven’t heard much else about it — until now. This week, Kelly has reignited interest in the effort he claims will get back to basics.
“When you’ve done twentysomething years, man, of giving people what they want, and satisfying people – people like to say they’re making babies off your music, they’re doing all this – it makes me feel good, but at the same time, it makes me say, ‘OK, now it’s time to go and do something that’s in me that I want to do and get out,” Kelly said of his last few albums.
Now that Kelly has satisfied that urge to try something different, he plans to have fun with “Black Panties.”
“The name of my next album is ‘Black Panties’ – that’s my next ’12 Play,'” Kelly tells CBS. “I’m going to have some fun on it.”
With songs like “In The Kitchen,” “Feelin On Yo Booty” and “Like a Real Freak,” Kelly is also known for his “Trapped In The Closet” saga.
Claiming the writing for that project is “alien” in nature, Kelly alludes to much drama and shocking twists in teasing the next few chapters.
“This thing is an alien, it has taken on a life of its own, but I love doing it because it’s stories,” Kelly says of the currently in production chapters.
In related news, R. Kelly has dubbed his anticipated tour “The Single Ladies Tour.” The trek, with dates to be announced, will kick off this Fall.
