As a veteran diva in the game, Ms. Toni Braxton has sold over 60 million records worldwide, starred in Broadway hits Beauty and the Beast and Aida, and headlined her own Vegas show. After public bankruptcies and revealing she’s been diagnosed with lupus, the petite powerhouse is bouncing back and getting busy in the studio making new music, as chronicled on the hit reality show “Braxton Family Values.”
Her first single titled “I Heart You” is going to be on the upcoming, yet-to-be-titled album. When speaking of the upbeat dance tune, she told the Huffington Post, “When I wrote this song, I was thinking about the feeling you get when you walk into a club and you hear the melody; you feel the beat, and you just know it’s going to be a good night.”
She explains the album will be a mix of up-tempo and melancholy odes to love, saying, “I’m definitely going to have more “I Heart Yous” on it. I’m also going to do some sad love songs. It’s going to be half and half. The three faces of Toni may appear.”
Being in the music business for 20 years gives one the advantage to see from the inside how things have changed, and Ms. Braxton is a testament to this. “It’s not always about even selling records anymore. It’s about how big you can make your personality, which creates this image that people want. Now you make records as a platform to tour,” she explains. In this new musical landscape, the R&B veteran says she admires artists like Rihanna because “she’s not afraid of her sexuality.”
But of all the things she’s accomplished, the biggest thing she is most proud of is the fact that she’s still moving and shaking in the industry, and in life. “That’s a really big deal,” she says.
