Just when fans thought he’s made a full comeback, El DeBarge has instead returned to his struggles with substance abuse. The Grammy-winning singer was arrested in Encino, CA on suspicion of drug possession with the intent to sell, according to department officials.
Undercover narcotics officers were working on an investigation in the L.A. suburbs when they noticed DeBarge and another man acting suspiciously. Officers ended up recovering narcotics from the area where DeBarge was standing.
He was booked and released on a $30,000 bail and is due back in court on April 9. This is the third time the singer has been arrested for drug possession since 2001.
DeBarge’s attorney, Spencer Vodney, expressed his skepticism and doubt of the charge due to his client’s known struggle with drugs.
“The DeBarge family is very close knit and have had their struggles with substance abuse,” Vodnoy said. “They will do what they always have done, which is to support their sibling through this.”
