Shortly after New Year’s, Aretha Franklin announced her engagement to longtime companion William “Willie” Wilkerson. However, fans should not be in any hurry to buy the “Respect” singer a wedding present anytime soon as they have decided to call off the wedding.
In a joint statement released on the 69-year-old singer’s Facebook page signed by “Aretha and Will,” Franklin explained: “Will and I have decided we were moving a little too fast, and there were a number of things that had not been thought through thoroughly. There will be no wedding at this time. We will not comment on it any further because of the very personal and sensitive nature of it. We appreciate all of the many well wishes from friends.”
At the time of the announcement three weeks ago, the 18-time Grammy winner told PEOPLE that she was looking to set the date some time in the early summer.
