D’Angelo will formally break his 12-year hiatus from music this year, according to manager Kevin Liles. While a specific release date has not been confirmed for the anticipated third studio album, at one point titled “James River,” Liles says the project is 90-95% finished.
“It’s 12 years of emotion, passion and love for music that has been pent up,” Liles told Billboard. “D’Angelo is finally going to share all of that. It’s a special space where he’s not searching for a song — he’s reaching for your soul.”
Following his debut “Brown Sugar” (1995) and follow up “Vodoo” (2000), D’Angelo has tapped ?uestlove and Q-Tip for the effort, which he primarily penned and produced.
Since “Brown Sugar,” D’Angelo has sold over 3 million albums worldwide according to Nielsen SoundScan.
