The cast of “Sparkle” just got a little bigger. Grammy winner Cee-Lo Green has been enlisted in the ensemble along with Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter and Omari Hardwick. In addition, R&B veteran R. Kelly has signed on to write original music for the soundtrack.
As previously reported, Sparkle will be played by American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, a music prodigy who struggles to become a star as she overcomes issues that are tearing her family apart. Whitney Houston, who is said to be a producer on the film, will play Sparkle’s “not-so encouraging mother.” Green will play a singer who serves as the girls’ opening act, while Ejogo and Sumpter will play Sparks’ siblings, Sister and Dolores, respectively.
The remake comes from the 1976 music-themed film that is inspired by the story of The Supremes. The original movie centers on three sisters who begin singing in their church choir in Harlem in the late 1950 before finding fame as a girl group. Their sudden rise, however, unravels their personal lives.
According to Variety, the film also stars Derek Luke as Stix, an aspiring Motown manager who discovers the sisters and eventually falls for Sparkle. Hardwick will play his cousin, Levi, who falls for Ejogo’s character but turns to a life of crime after she’s stolen from him by Detroit comic Satin Struthers, who will be played by Mike Epps.
