Seasoned actress, Jada Pinkett Smith continues to defend her and husband, Will Smith’s decision to allow their kids to begin their showbiz careers so early. She insists that Willow and Jaden don’t bear the same financial burdens as other child stars.
She tells Britain’s Daily Mail, “Our children are allowed to stay in the paradigm of being a child. They don’t have to take care of their families: become the complete emotional, physical, and financial focus that happens to many child stars. Our family structure is a little different and it’s quite hard to comprehend because it’s so outside what usually happens in a family, but the paradigm is the same.”
Amidst 12-year-old, Jaden’s award-winning 2010 remake of ‘The Karate Kid’ and 10-year-old, Willow’s budding musical career and current tour with Justin Beiber, the parents have come under public scrutiny.
Author, Terry McMillan, has even accused the parents of “exploiting” and “pimping” the pre-teens. Jada, ever-graceful under pressure, doesn’t seem phased or swayed by McMillan or anyone else’s opinion.
“This isn’t about fame or money.” She goes on to say, “They were still going to have their trials because of who their parents are. As much as I wish I could figure out a way I could protect my children, they have their destiny. I’m not going to put brakes on that out of fear.”
At the same time, Jada recognizes the huge following her children have, and that she must keep a watchful eye on their growth. “I will not overlook that. I have a 10-year-old who can stand up in front of an audience of 17,000 and rock the house. I have to keep her grounded.”
Seeing the public trials other young breakout stars have experienced, it is clear that Jada and Will have a good grasp on their children’s futures. “Pimping” and “exploiting” is a far cry from fostering the talents of the young celebrities.
