ASCAP Honors Kelly Rowland, Melanie Fiona and Company

R&B singer Kelly Rowland was honored by ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) at the 2nd annual ASCAP Presents… Women Behind the Music in Atlanta last week. As a solo artist, Rowland has sold over 4 million albums worldwide and over 40 million records as a group member of Destiny’s Child. The series is designed to encourage and recognize women in the music community, highlighting not only women songwriters and artists, but women working in all facets of the business, including managers, attorneys, label executives and music publishers. On October 14, 2010, /SRC-Motown Universal Records artist Melanie Melanie Fiona will be honored in New York City, while musician/singer Sheila E. will be recognized in LA on Oct 27. Each event features three honorees and a moderator who will share ‘Her Story’ about navigating the music business. The honorees will be presented with a special memento in recognition of their contributions to music. Last year’s inaugural series included Grammy Award-winning songwriter and star of Bravo’s The Housewives of Atlanta Kandi Burress, singer/songwriter Goapele and R&B girl group Electrik Red. “We created this series to recognize the immense contributions that women make across all areas of the music business,” said Nicole George, ASCAP Vice President of Membership – Rhythm & Soul. We picked the ‘Her Story’ theme to remind ourselves to look back at the journey that connects us all which will, hopefully, excite women on how far we’ve come and inspire them to create their own story. I’m thrilled to continue this amazing series.”
