Black Music Innovators: Jodeci

“Every time I close my eyes, I wake up feelin’ so horny, I can’t get you outta my mind, sexin’ you be all I see, I would give anything, Just to make you understand me, I don’t give a damn about nothing else, freek’n you is all I see.” – Freek ‘N’ You

The 1990 craze of four men revolved around, sex, love, pain and sweaty bodies; that bad-boy image was brought in by Teddy Riley, formerly of Guy and one of Jodeci’s influences. These men were the new “new jack swing.” Made up of two sets of brothers, the group’s name is a consolidation of three members’ stage names: “JoJo” Hailey, Donald “DeVante Swing” DeGrate, and Cedric “K-Ci” Hailey; the group also includes Dalvin DeGrate. They are all native of Charlotte, NC. The sex appeal and vocals are what held them together until age, drugs and stardom got in the way, resulting to break up and the new group of the two brothers, K-Ci and JoJo. They eventually broke up and in 2008 Bryan Michael Cox, award-winning songwriter/producer stated he was putting together the new Jodeci; “Nodeci”. Don’t know why he would even do that because Jodeci is rare in this industry. Good music all the time. They were around from 1991 to 2004 respectively. But the artists that follow in their footsteps exude sex and talent. They include Ginuwine, 112, Jagged Edge and Usher.

Who Had Next:

“I’m just a bachelor, I’m lookin’ for a partner, someone who knows how to ride without even fallin’ off, gotta be compatible takes me to my limits, girl when I break you off, I promise that you won’t wanna get off”- Pony

Ginuwine: He represented Washington, D.C as a college student just in case his singing career failed him. But somehow it took off. In 1996, he got the name Ginuwine and was discovered by Jodeci. In NYC, he met up with producer Timbaland, produced the hit “Pony,” which helped him get a deal with Sony’s 550 Music imprint. He is now settled down with Sole’ with their four children and producing a new album; Elgin (rumored).

“Peaches & cream, I need it ’cause you know that I’m a fiend, gettin’ freaky in my Bentley limousine, it’s even better when it’s with ice cream, know what I mean” – Peaches & Cream

112: Something about these dudes turned women out times two! Even had the men getting more panties that they should have been. The four members of 112 — Marvin, Daron, Q, and Mike — met each other while attending high school in Atlanta, GAIn the game by 1996- 2003, they were trained in gospel, soul, and hip-hop. 112 were the first and most successful urban vocal group to emerge from Sean “Puffy” Combs’ Bad Boy Records roster. They are known for hits like ” Peaches & Cream” “Cupid” and hooks on the other Bad Boy artists’ records.

“See, first of all, I know these so called playas wouldn’t tell you this, but I’m a be real and say what’s on my heart, let’s take this chance and make this love feel relevant, didn’t you know I loved you from the start, yeah” – Let’s Get Married

Jagged Edge: This group was the grown-up side of Jodeci; another side to the coin. All they were focused on were marrying women and having babies, and maybe a tad bit of chasing. The smooth male vocal quartet Jagged Edge discovered in Atlanta, included identical twin brothers Brandon “Case Dinero” Casey and Brian “Brasco” Casey, Kyle Norman (aka “Quick”), and Richard Wingo (aka “Wingo Dollar”), who was also a last addition to the group that Xscape’s Kandi Burruss suggested. They received the Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this year rewarding twelve years of good success.

“They call me US-HER-RA-YM-OND, now baby tell me what you wanna do with me, gotta nigga feenin’ like Jodeci, every time that you roll with me, holdin’ me, tryin’ to get control of me, nice and slowly, you know, never lettin’ go, never messin’ up the flow, this is how the hook go” – Nice & Slow

Usher: One of the few solo artists that looked up to Jodeci and surpassed their success. He was spotted by a LaFace record executive at a talent show in his hometown of Atlanta. Introduced as “Usher,” he released his debut album of the same name in 1994, which featured co-executive producer Sean “Puffy” Combs. The first single, “Think of You,” gained Usher wide recognition and reached gold status. He is most known for his relationship with TLC member Chilli and divorce from Tameka Raymond. He is currently #1 on the billboard for his latest album, Raymond vs Raymond.
