Perhaps recognized best for the classic recording “Lil Red Boat” and as the first and only artist signed to a recording contract with noted producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (Flyte Tyme Records), alternative folk/soul singer Angel Grant is gearing up for a return to music. Leading off with the single “I Wonder,” Grant is set to release her first album in over nine years this May (2010). Titled “My Journey Back,” the album is a personal and unplanned effort Grant is now glad to have recorded after abandoning the music industry years ago. “When you let parts of yourself die — My Journey Back, thatâs the title of the album, thatâs what itâs about. People were thinking it was âback to musicâ or âback to the music business,â it means âback to livingâ and wanting to live because I allowed a part of myself to die and not even look back,” Grant says of the album and coping with the passing of her mother. “I knew that this was something she wanted me to do. Everything you hear on this effort is about what I am going through, what I have been through in the process with my mom. Itâs not a gloomy album at all but it is definitely therapy. Its real⦠itâs very, very real.” Written, produced, and arranged by Grant, “My Journey Back” is an effort that is timely, yet timeless as well. “You can put it on, press play and understand and see that somebody else feels the same way. I know I didnât write this album for myself,” says Grant. “I prayed before writing. My team, the musicians, we pray before we rehearse. So, it is bigger than us. We are the catalyst but it is so much bigger than us.” “My Journey Back,” featuring the single “I Wonder,” is slated for release May 25 via digital retailers including iTunes and CD Baby.
