Kiely Williams will not stand by and let critics defame her work of art. The former Cheetah Girl, who recently released the music video for her first single âSpectacular,â his defending the racy lyrics in the song, stating she is playing a character. âI am an actor and performer,â says Williams in a statement to Singersroom. âI have been so since my first role in a television pilot at five years old. I played a character when I was a âCheetah Girl.â I am playing a character in the music video for the song âSpectacular,â as I did in the âCheetah Girlâ movies.â Williams goes on to say viewers are taking the video for what it really is, rather than absorbing the message. âThe fact is, that sometimes women get intoxicated and have unprotected sex. My video puts this issue front and center. It is absurd to infer or suggest that I am condoning this behavior.â To staple her point, Williams also referenced other stars who are portraying a message through their art. âAre Lady Gaga and Beyonce advocating murder with the âTelephoneâ video? Of, course not. Was Rihanna encouraging suicide with âRussian Roulette?â No. Was Madonna suggesting that young unmarried girls get pregnant with âPapa Donât Preach?â I donât think so. Is Academy Award winner Monique a proponent of incest because of her portrayal of Mary in the movie âPrecious.â Clearly, the answer is no.â So why do Williams write this song? I wrote âSpectacularâ and made the video to bring attention to a serious womenâs health and safety issue. Donât shoot the messenger. Watch âSpectacularâ here on Singersroom and tell us if this is art or publicity stunt.
