Jay Z Joins Jackson On American Music Award Winners List

Jay Z and Michael Jackson took home the biggest honors in Hip-Hop and R&B at the 2009 American Music Awards Sunday night. Winning top honors in both fields for ‘Favorite Album’ and ‘Favorite Male Artist,’ Jay Z and Michael Jackson reigned supreme during a night full of performances and appearances from some of R&B and Hip Hop’s best. Featuring performances from Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, and Alicia Keys (see photos HERE), the 37th Annual American Music Awards also included appearances from Keri Hilson, Toni Braxton, Jeremih, Kid Cudi, Drake, and Ne-Yo (see photos HERE). While the night’s biggest winner was Taylor Swift, who took home a strong five awards, including Artist of the Year, the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, broke all records. With a total of four award wins, including Favorite Male Pop/Rock, Jackson now holds the record for the most wins by a single artist in American Music Award history. Jackson’s brother, Jermaine, accepted two awards during the broadcast, thanking everyone for their support and extending thanks from other family members, including Janet Jackson. Beyonce, the Black Eyed Peas, and Mary Mary also picked up awards. Whitney Houston, performing “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength,” received a strong reception when picking up the ‘International Artist Award’. She now joins Michael Jackson as one of less than ten to receive the honor. The 2009 American Music Awards aired Sunday, November 22 on ABC.
