Whoppi Goldberg’s first week on Broadway’s “Xanadu” has become a certified hit ! ‘The View’ co-host turned up the weekly box office total by more than $75,000 according to Variety. Despite strong reviews and Tony nominations, “Xanadu” had not matched the success of other Broadway hits– that is until Whoppi Goldberg joined that cast which filled the theater to 87% capacity each night, producing first week ticket sales of $316, 205. Goldberg, who portrays Calliope/Aphrodite will perform in “Xanadu” through September 7th as announced on ‘The View’ in July. “What better way to stick my toe back on to the Broadway stage than to join the amazing cast of Xanadu. It’s such a fun show and is definitely my sensibility, as written by the divine Douglas Carter Beane. For me, it’s going to be unbelievable,” Goldberg said in a statement. In related news, Goldberg, who is also producing “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf,” has postponed the new Broadway show until September 8th citing the loss of one of the production’s important backers. India Aire is still set to appear in the project which is also choreographed by Hinton Battle (‘Dreamgirls’).
