Producer AKAY summons the soulful voice of Swedish-Iranian singer Ayelle for the emotionally-rich new single, “Lights Out,” a song about “falling for someone who is unavailable, but they’re falling for you too, and you have to savor every moment you have together in the dark.”
“During the production of this track, I focused on using percussive elements that sounded unique to what I hear on the radio,” says Jed (aka AKAY). “R&B always gave me this really sexy vibe and I try to emulate that in my songs. I’m a big fan of using sustained synths to create a relaxed vibe.”
The combination of a rhythmic and refined production coupled with Ayelle’s well-tooled and polished delivery makes for a superb offering.
AKAY is an 18-year-old Half-Scottish and Half-Malaysian artist who came into limelight when he first started producing music in August 2015. His remix of Nakala’s “Paris” was featured on Skrillex’s Nest HQ, which garnered 1 million total plays on his Soundcloud.
Possessing a bittersweet R&B sound has been likened to Banks, Kelela, and Wafia, Swedish-Iranian songstress Ayelle’s downtempo, urban sensibilities can be defined as arousing pleasure tinged with sadness or pain. Drawing inspiration from her own life experiences, she often incorporates feminist elements into her lyrics, which challenge the status quo.
