SR Gospel: Marvin Sapp Reacts To ‘Made It’ Grammy Snub, Wins 09 Stellar Awards

Stellar Award-winning Gospel recording star Marvin Sapp says it was “disappointing to learn that “Never Would Have Made It,” his chart-topping single was not nominated for a Grammy due to a technicality. According to nomination rules, Sapp’s “Never Would Have Made It” was ineligible this year because a previous version of the song had been released in 2007. In 2008, Sapp’s “Never Would Have Made It” stormed onto the charts, hitting #1 on the Billboard Gospel singles chart while also garnering attention from mainstream/secular media outlets (it was also performed live at the 2008 BET Awards). In a statement released last week Marvin Sapp said: “I was certainly excited about the prospect of being nominated this year, but I didn’t write ‘Never Would Have Made It’ to win a Grammy, or any of the accolades that the song has generated for that matter.” “I am most fulfilled and humbled by the thousands of testimonies I have heard about how that one song has helped so many get through so much.” “Most of you know God gave me that song when I was going through the toughest time of my own life, so He knew the impact it would have on people and He gets the glory! I thank everyone for their support and encouragement. Please, keep supporting gospel music and let’s get ‘Thirsty’ to platinum – that’s something I would certainly love to see happen!” Marvin Sapp did, however, win several Stellar Awards Saturday — click here for a full list of 2009 Stellar Award winners including Dorinda Clark Cole, Jonathan Nelson and more.
