A fire at Teddy Rileyâs former Future Records Recording Studio became the most tragic property related story in the music world this year. Rileyâs studio, a historic landmark where hits for Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson and Blackstreet, burned down in June after several months of reported financial woes. The 3, 300- square foot studio, which was slated to be auctioned off prior to the fire, opened in 1991. While Riley has moved on by establishing another company (according to Ballerstatus), the equipment and any artifacts left behind were destroyed in the fire. Authorities blamed the fire on electrical problems after conducting a several week investigation. Riley is still regarded as âthe King of New Jack Swingâ and a pioneer in the eyes of fans, artists and producers. His work with everyone from Guy to Michael Jackson has been awarded honors including ASCAPâs 1993 award for Rhythm & Soul Songwriter of the Year.
