After many “think pieces” and editorials, it’s been established that Beyonce’s newest single “Formation” is a declaration of pride for her family roots and culture as she declares herself unapologetically as a black woman. With any popular song, it was only a matter of time before people would cover the song. But with lyrics like “I like my Negro nose with Jackson 5 nostrils” and “I like my baby hair, with baby hair and Afros,” it’s interesting to see white people boldly take on those lyrics in the form of acoustic and country ballads, but that’s what a few did.

After that, the hurricane known as “Black Twitter” got wind of these covers and decided to hilariously remake some well-known song performed by white artists and give them #TrapCovers.
Using “trap” tracks (which is a sub-genre of rap music that is unapologetically black and southern, much like Beyonce and her “Formation” song/video), and aluminum foil for fake grills, people took on songs like Britney Spears’ “Hit Me Baby One More Time,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from the movie “Mary Poppins”, “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton, even the Disney tune “Make A Man Out Of You”… nothing was off limits.

(I’m not gonna lie; I turned up a little on the “Mulan” one lol…)
‘Tis true, anyone can cover whatever song they like, but in this case of Beyonce’s pro-black anthem with the aforementioned lyrics mentioned above (or any “pro-black” anthem for that matter, example: James Brown’s “I’m Black and I’m Proud”), there seems to be an unwritten rule with songs like these that state they are off-limits for white people to cover.
