Singer/songwriter Lyfe Jennings is doing his part to bring awareness and hope to the city of Baltimore in the light of community unrest following the death of Eddie Gray, who was in police custody.
The veteran R&B singer was scheduled to hit the city for a promotional tour of his upcoming sixth studio album, but the trip was canceled due to protests and riots, so he penned the song shortly after to show his support.
"People they say we burning Baltimore / Kids too young to be going to war / Gotta find a better solution / What are you doing," Lyfe sings.
Lyfe's forthcoming album, Tree Of Lyfe, led by the single "Pretty Is," is due on June 23rd via RAL/Sony Music Entertainment. "The Tree Of Lyfe album represents growth, expression, human connection and support," says Lyfe. "I've always felt people are the tree of life and not success or materialistic things."
In addition to Lyfe, music icon Prince also penned a record in support of Baltimore. Set to drop soon, the new song addresses the police killings of black men and also serves as a tribute to the people of Baltimore, a rep told Billboard. Prince also released artwork (pictured above) to accompany the forthcoming single, which was recorded this week at Prince's Paisley Park studios near Minneapolis, Minn.
Today, Baltimore's top prosecutor announced criminal charges against six cops involved in 25-year-old Freddie Gray's death. Gray died after suffering a neck injury while in police custody during an arrest on April 12. According to Marilyn Mosby, Baltimore State Attorney, police had no cause to arrest Gray, who was placed face down in a police van while handcuffed and in ankle restraints.
