Long hair, short hair, no hair, curly hair, relaxed hair, permed hair, and everything in between was sweeped up in 2009. If we never learned about our hair or looked at the hair care industry and entertainment with a side eye before, we certainly did this year. It all started in the spring when certain celebrities were not only busted and lambasted for nude photographs but for hair cuts, wigs, and other hair pieces that were either deemed cute, hot or horrible. âLong Way To Goâ singer Cassie shocked fans and music enthusiasts when she decided to shave one side of her head full of beautiful black flowing locks off (she later received a different look when photographs of her in the nude made rounds) but, that was just the beginning. Celebrities from Keyshia Cole to Ciara and Solange Knowles joined in the fad, not just cutting but carving out or braiding multi colored stars and other unique pieces of iconography just above their scalp. Even Kanye West girlfriend turned model and perhaps personality Amber Rose was deemed hot for her short cut. As with anything that turns heads, the hair fad became a topic at the âwatercoolerâ. People seemed interested in weighing in and trying out similar hairdos while some ended up attacking short hair⦠particularly a select group of men who believe women are less attractive with a short cut. As you know the hair debate died off for a short while until Chris Rockâs anticipated documentary âGood Hairâ began to make its rounds and eventual debut in theaters. Featuring actress Nia Long, singer/actress Raven Symone, actress Lauren London and more, âGood Hairâ shed light not only on the black hair care experience from the perspective of those buying hair, doing hair and even selling hair but that of the community at large. For the first time hair care, particularly relaxers, perm and other formats for straightening hair were discussed in forums from hair salons and barbershops to major talk shows like âOprahâ and âThe Wendy Williams Showâ. Even still the question remains⦠what is Good Hair ?
