Making history over the weekend as the first African American woman to ever be nominated for two Oscars for the same film (‘Mudbound’), Mary J. Blige had a few things to work out in her personal life to fully celebrate her recent gains.
According to reports, The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul finally reached a settlement with her estranged husband in their controversial divorce battle.
In July 2016, Mary and her then-husband Martin ‘Kendu’ Isaacs decided to call it quits on their 12-year marriage. The two have been in a legal battle over finances since the divorce papers were initially filed.
Last summer, Blige was ordered to pay her Ex $30,000-a-month in temporary spousal support, but that wasn’t enough for Kendu. As the singer’s former manager, Isaacs requested that the judge increase his monthly allowance to $65,000. He claimed that he was close to becoming “destitute” after failing to find work since the couple’s separation.
He went onto accuse Blige of making things worse for him by singing about their marital problems on singles “Love Yourself” and “Set Me Free,” from her album Strength of a Woman.
Due in court on Monday (March 5th), the couple was able to settle a bit early (Friday, March 2nd). The overseeing judge dismissed Isaacs’ bid for more money back in October, but the couple has now reached an undisclosed agreement.
Mary J. Blige was against having to pay Isaacs temporary spousal support, after accusing him of being unfaithful during their marriage. She then offered to personally cover a massive $11 million debt the pair owed if the judge agreed to end her spousal support payments.
Although Mary, unfortunately, didn’t receive any awards during last night’s 90th Academy Awards, the singer appeared victorious following her performance of the nominated single, “Mighty River.”
