Singer/actress Demetria McKinney will release her long-delayed debut album, Officially Yours, on October 6.
The project, produced by Grammy Award-winning artist and producer Kandi Burruss, is preceded by the singles “Is This Love” and the top 5 Urban AC hit “Easy.”
Fans who pre-order the album will receive “Easy” as an Instant Grat track. Two other Instant Grat tracks will be available with preorder prior to street date: “Happy” on September 22, and “No, No, No” on September 29.
All the songs on ‘Officially Yours’ originate from a place within Demetria that up until now she has only expressed through the characters that she has played.
“As a recording artist, this is where the most truthful, transparent side of me will be seen and heard,” Demetria says. “People mostly know me for the roles I have played, and they are all roles that I chose specifically for the lessons that I would learn from each character. Personally, I never wanted to show vulnerability because I thought it was a sign of weakness. I didn’t want to talk about situations I’ve endured and I would shut off opportunities that would make me connect with any past pain. I always hid behind my characters and allowed them to overshadow Demetria. But the reason I call this LP Officially Yours is because the music represents the ‘official’ Demetria McKinney.”
In addition to the upcoming album, McKinney is set to portray the late music legend Whitney Houston in TV One’s forthcoming biopic Bobbi Kristina, a film about Bobbi Kristina Brown, the only child of Houston and singer Bobby Brown.
The film movie is set to premiere on Sunday, October 8th, but may not see the light of day if a judge bars it. As reported on Singersroom, Bobby Brown and Bobbi Kristina’s estate joined forces and filed a lawsuit to block the film. They are also requesting damages.
Demetria McKinney is a triple threat in the truest sense of the term. She is an award-winning actress who has played diverse roles on the big and small screens as well as the stage. She is a talented singer, and she is an accomplished songwriter who generously expresses emotions in a way that instantly connects with listeners.
McKinney is widely known for her role as Janine Payne on the hit TBS sitcom Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, which has taped over 254 episodes and received five NAACP Image Awards for Best Sitcom. Demetria will also be reviving her role as Janine in the new Tyler Perry show The Paynes, debuting on OWN in 2018.
Additionally, she will star in actor/director Mario Van Peebles’ TV series Superstition, premiering on the Syfy Network on October 6th.
