Following her New Year’s Eve mishap and public split from James Packer in October, Mariah Carey is going back to the source: making new music.
Prior to the premiere, it was reported last week she was working with rapper YG for a new song. Carey teased the tune with an Instagram graphic of the words “I Do” being crossed out by red lipstick and replaced with the words “I Don’t.”
On last night’s season finale of her E! docu-series “Mariah’s World,” Carey premiered a snippet of her new song inspired by the breakup. In the clip below, Carey sings in the studio, the song featuring an interpolation of the Donell Jones classic “Where I Wanna Be.”
“Cause when you love someone, you just don’t treat them bad, you messed up all we had. Probably think I’m coming back, but I don’t, I don’t,” she sings.
“Ever since the tour wrapped I took some time just to process my feelings and I started writing a song to express what I’ve been going through,” she explained on the show. “And if you’re not getting the love that you need from someone that you’re supposed to be in a real relationship with, then why remain in that situation?”
Despite the breakup, Carey is allegedly pursuing a new relationship with her 33-year-old background dancer Bryan Tanaka.
“I Don’t” will be available for purchase in full on Friday, Feb. 3rd.
What do you think of the song so far? Hit or nah?
