Kevin Garrett releases the music video for his mellow and thought-provoking ballad, “Precious.” In the black and white clip, directed by long-time collaborator Shervin Lainez and shot in NYC, the Brooklyn-based, Pittsburgh-born singer-songwriter gets up close with the camera as he delivers the emotional song about not celebrating a love that is gone.
“I wanted to work with Shervin to make a video that focused on self-preservation but still represented the core of the song which is trying to get over a past love,” says Kevin. “Hence there being minimal shots of the other character that slowly dissipate as the video progresses.”
“Precious” by Kevin Garrett is a deeply moving and introspective track that combines elements of contemporary R&B with a touch of indie pop. The song opens with a delicate, piano-driven instrumental that sets a tender and contemplative mood. Kevin Garrett’s vocals are intimate and emotive, delivering the lyrics with a blend of vulnerability and sincerity that draws listeners into the song’s emotional core.
The production of “Precious” is understated yet rich, allowing Garrett’s voice to take center stage. The arrangement features soft piano melodies, subtle strings, and a minimalistic beat that creates a warm and immersive soundscape. The chorus is particularly poignant, with its evocative melody and heartfelt lyrics capturing the essence of cherishing something or someone deeply meaningful.
Lyrically, “Precious” explores themes of love, appreciation, and the value of important relationships. The song’s narrative delves into the emotions associated with recognizing and valuing the things that matter most in life, conveying a sense of gratitude and reflection. Kevin Garrett’s delivery is both tender and powerful, reflecting the song’s deep emotional resonance.
Overall, “Precious” is a standout track that showcases Kevin Garrett’s ability to blend soulful melodies with introspective themes, creating a moving and reflective listening experience.
“Precious” serves as Kevin’s first release since co-writing and co-producing “Pray You Catch Me” from Beyoncé’s sixth studio album, Lemonade. The release also follows his 2015 debut EP, Mellow Drama.
