Tell us about yourself as an individual…likes, dislikes, etc.
Besides being a songwriter and recording artist, I’m a Registered Nurse. I love the correlation between music and medicine because both have the ability to heal. I’m an avid reader, huge lover of all kinds of music, good food and anything on the ID Channel. As far as dislikes go, I don’t like being too hot, dealing with fake people or when my personal space is invaded without clearance being given. Lol, is that being too honest?
How and where did you develop your love for music?
I grew up in a singing family, so music has been a part of my life since I can remember. My dad’s a pastor, so my early musical experiences were shaped by artists like the Clark Sisters, the Winans, and Jon Gibson. We weren’t allowed to listen to secular music, so I had to sneak other artists in on my own. This resulted in my very diverse musical palate.
How would you explain your musical sound? What artist(s) or person(s) helps inspire you?
I would describe myself as an Edgy Soul Songstress. I love rock, so you’ll hear that peek through from time to time. I’m a huge fan of Prince, for his innovative and ever-changing styles, Sade, for her timeless music, and Jill Scott, for her writing. This is my short list, lol, but they’re at the top and inspire me to make memorable music.
When you are making songs, do you think about your fans or do you just creative what you feel?
When I’m writing, I think coming from an authentic place is so important. To try and write something that’s commercial or something that I think people will like is actually a lot more restrictive to me. I’ve found that writing from a personal perspective is usually more relatable and allows me to connect more easily. I’m no different than anyone else trying to navigate through this thing called life, and the music is what connects us.
What’s been rewarding about your time making music? What would you like to forget?
This journey has been amazing so far, and I’ve met some incredible people. Having strangers connect with me through my music has been a very humbling experience. I recently opened for Corinne Bailey Rae and the audience, newly introduced to me, embraced my music on such a deep level. This is why I do what I do and why I love it so much. The negative experiences hold just as much importance because they keep me grounded and once I’ve overcome them, they remind me where I’ve been. So, it’s all in the journey!
What are you currently working and what’s next?
I’m in the studio working on album #2 (Spring 2017), and I’m so excited for people to hear how I’ve grown musically and just where I am in my life right now. We are living in some crazy times, and my writing has taken me to some places where I’m exploring those topics. A single from the upcoming album (not yet titled) is set for the end of this year. In the meantime, if you haven’t checked out my debut album, K.Avett: Revelations, you should! It is available for download anywhere music is sold and also on my website – kavett.com – via PayPal. (Side note, if you order from the website, you’ll receive a personally signed copy by yours truly).
