R&B diva Miki Howard’s episode of Unsung on TV One was so compelling, it spurred the making of a TV movie: “Love Under New Management: The Miki Howard Story.”
The film will follow the tumultuous life story of Howard, who rose to fame in the 80s with hits such as “Love Under New Management,” “Come Share My Love” and “Baby Be Mine.”
The biopic will touch on her rocky relationship with her mother, her romantic relationship with R&B singer Gerald Levert, and her battle with drug addiction and suffering domestic violence.
Actress Teyonah Parris stars as Howard, while other cast members include Vanessa Bell Calloway as Miki’s mother, Josephine Howard, LisaRaye as famed record exec Sylvia Rhone, and Darius McCrary as Gerald Levert, and Gary Dourdan as Augie Johnson.
Howard aims to bring about the conversation regarding issues affecting black women. “We need to have a conversation about many of the things that happened to me as a young woman coming up in show business and being an African-American woman… I don’t think we talk about enough things that are prevalent in our community, such as spousal abuse and trying to live up to expectations that are not our own.”
“Love Under New Management” will air at 7 pm Sunday, June 12 on TV One, just in time for Black Music Month.
