A little over 25 years ago, After 7 catapulted onto the music scene with immediate success. The trio consisted of two brothers Kevon and Melvin Edmonds and close friend Keith Mitchell, who sang their way into our hearts and packed dance floors with hits like “Heat of the Moment” and “Ready or Not”.
Thrust into the 90’s new jack swing era, After 7 enjoyed continued success for the next several years. As the industry slowly began to move in a different direction, After 7 slowly stopped touring and recording. In our interview, Kevon explained, “a lot of the romance that R&B was built on disappeared over the years.”
Now, as the current resurgence of “soul” music is stronger than ever, After 7 is back and showing that they ain’t playing around! You may have seen them on the 2015 Soul Train Awards singing alongside Jazmine Sullivan, Fanstasia, and Brandy to honor Kevon’s brother, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds.
They have a new single entitled “I Want You,” and with their comeback, the group boasts a new addition to the group: Jason Edmonds has replaced his father Melvin. “What I find interesting,” Jason says, “is that the market being in its current state. On a positive note, what that’s done, is it’s caused the artists who are truly special to rise.”
With their new single, I have a feeling they are going to continue rising! They are currently working in the studio on a new album they promised to keep us updated on the details.
