After posting today’s date on Twitter for the past few dates, it’s clear to see why: Willow Smith has released her album as a surprise.
Ardipithecus isn’t just the title of the LP, it’s a fossil found in Ethiopia believed to be one of the earliest ancestors of humans, so it’s clear Willow is making a statement with the artwork and the album’s content.
She told The FADER, “I wanted to name my musical compilation after it because, while I was making these songs I was in such a transitional state. Digging deep in the soil of my heart and finding bits and pieces of my ancient self that tell stories, which end up being the lyrics to the songs. Ardipithecus is my first album in my entire career and it makes me feel so blessed to be able to share my evolution with the LightEaters as I continue excavating my inner worlds…"
The young artist produced 10 of the LP’s tracks and wrote a full 14 out of the 15. Willow is a true artist, and only at the tender age of fifteen!
