With the success of Straight Outta Compton and talk of a film about Tupac, the biopic game is hot right now!
Enter Toni Braxton, who seems to be another artist to get the biopic treatment, however, she’s starring as herself in hers!
The Lifetime Network has recently set forth to take on the project, set be called Un-Break My Heart, which is based on Braxton’s 2014 memoir of the same name.
The film will highlight her rise to fame as a 90s R&B songstress, her struggles with lupus, financial troubles, her divorce, and dealing with her son’s autism. Along with starring as herself, she will also executive produce, while Vondie Curtis Hall (Abducted: The Carline White Story, Waist Deep) will direct.
Right off the bat, I'm sure you gave this news slight side eye, given their history with doing music biopics. If the Lifetime films Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, Man In The Mirror: The Michael Jackson Story, and Whitney are any indication, we have to be nervous.
However, remember: all three of those films were unauthorized movies and weren’t supported by the subjects or the subjects families. Fantasia is another artist who played herself in a film based off of her memoir, Life Is Not A Fairytale: The Fantasia Barrino Story, and was received well. And seeing that Fantasia and Toni are both involved in the production, there should be a cohesiveness that resonates with audiences.
We’ll just have to see!
