Any SpongeBob Squarepants fans in the house?
Your favorite cartoon sea creature is coming to a stage near you next year in musical form, and John Legend is just one artist who has signed on the contribute his music-making skills to the production.
And the rest of the lineup isn’t exactly child’s play, either!
According to Entertainment Weekly, David Bowie, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, Cyndi Lauper, T.I., and more have also agreed to offer their music prowess to the project, which will play at Chicago's Oriental Theatre starting June 7, 2016. The plan is to make it to Broadway.
Tina Landau will direct and Tom Kitt will be the music supervisor. “We’re taking leads from the TV show, but this is an original story with an original design approach and original songs written just for the occasion by an amazing array of songwriters,” continued Landau. “We will present the world of [SpongeBob‘s] Bikini Bottom and its characters in a whole new way that can only be achieved in the live medium of the theater.”
It will be interesting to hear how John Legend's sound translates into a musical based off of a cartoon!
