Over the summer, Musiq Soulchild was busy revamping his image as the rapper/singer “The Husel,” much to the chagrin of many fans.
Last Friday (October 10), the artist visited Power 105’s The Breakfast Club hosts DJ Envy, Charlamagne and Angela Yee to clear the air about his different musical direction, and they dig into the Philly artist with the hard hitting questions everybody wants to know.
“The Husel” explains he’s not abandoning R&B, rather he’s exploring another avenue of artistic expression for all of the people on their grind. “Everybody in this room right now is on their hustle, right? I’m making soundtrack music for people like us. It’s as simple as that,” he explains.
When asked why he’s using heavy auto tune even though he can sing, he replies, “It’s not just for people who can’t sing. It’s not different than a chick wearing makeup….It’s another tool to be used to be creative with. I don’t need to not know how to sing in order to use auto-tune. It’s fun.”
And when it comes to abandoning his R&B sound, he says it’s because the people aren’t supporting it. “I congratulate anybody that’s doing it because it’s hard enough to even be recognized in this big world being somebody, anybody doing anything. Coming from a culture of music where people really cared about if you could sing or if you could write really good songs, if you could really move them emotionally with music, I don’t really feel like that’s a top priority right now.”
