Biography
She is a singer-songwriter, producer and activist – Goapele Mohlabane. Born in Oakland, California to South African parents, she has been surrounded by music her entire life. Her mother was an accomplished opera singer, while her father was a political activist who exposed the family to a wide range of musical styles like jazz and world music. Growing up, her talent for singing became evident as she sang with choirs at church services and local events throughout the Bay Area.
Goapele’s career took off when she released her first album Closer in 2001 which featured hits “Closer” and “Rain”. She then toured extensively across North America performing on many stages including SXSW Music Festival, Glastonbury Festival and BET’s 106 & Park Tour. Throughout this time period Goapele continued to develop her sound through collaborations with hip hop artists such as Too Short, Talib Kweli and Blackalicious as well as soul greats Musiq Soulchild and Angie Stone.
