Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson of hip hop/neo soul band The Roots announced yesterday (Feb 27) that he’ll release a memoir titled Mo’ Meta Blues: The World According to Questlove on June 18th through Grand Central Publishing.

The book will include Quest’s childhood during the 70s in Philadelphia, the formation of The Roots, and his run-ins and experiences with celebrities while on tour and in the studio, those such as Stevie Wonder, KISS and Jay-Z. A statement claims it will speak on "some of the lates, the greats, the fakes and the true originals of the music world," and acknowledge Quest’s thoughts on "pivotal moments in black music and pop culture."

Quest is also busy teaching a course at NYU on "Topics in Recorded Music: Classic Albums,” and is working on D’Angelo and Elvis Costello’s next album. The Roots are currently the house band for “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.”

Thompson has produced for Jay-Z, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu and John Legend, and has been in the game for a minute, so the book should make for great summer reading!

Background Of The Artist

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson is a renowned musician, producer and author who has been at the forefront of popular music for more than two decades. He was born in Philadelphia in 1971 to Lee Andrews and Jacqueline Thompson-Crews. Growing up, Questlove’s parents exposed him to an eclectic mix of music that included funk, soul, rock & roll, gospel and jazz.

In 1987 he co-founded The Roots with high school friend Tariq Trotter (Black Thought). Together they created a unique sound that blended hip hop beats with live instrumentation; their musical style earned them critical acclaim as well as commercial success. Over the years, The Roots have released numerous albums and won four Grammy Awards.

Aside from music production, Questlove has also gained recognition through his writing career. In 2018 he published Creative Quest: Lessons from My Life – a memoir which reveals how his life experiences shaped his creative journey. Now he’s set to release Summer Of Soul (…Or When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised), another highly anticipated book about his formative teenage years during the summer of 1991 when rap was transforming American culture.

Details Of The Book

In this upcoming book, Questlove offers an intimate look at the summer of 1991 when he was a young adult. He captures his personal memories and reflections of that momentous time in American history when rap music changed popular culture forever. Drawing on his own experiences as well as those of other influential figures from the era, Summer Of Soul (…Or When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised) explores how hip hop became both a creative force and a movement for social change.

This memoir is also interspersed with interviews featuring some of the biggest names in rap such as Afrika Bambaataa and Chuck D, giving readers unprecedented access to their stories and insights into what it meant to be part of this musical revolution. Additionally, Questlove weaves in anecdotes about legendary artists like Tupac Shakur and Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA – providing unique insight into why they have remained so influential decades later.

Ultimately, by combining vivid storytelling with thoughtful analysis, Summer Of Soul promises to give readers an engaging glimpse into a pivotal period in American history through the eyes of one of its most celebrated chroniclers.
