Motown legend Berry Gordy is looking for talent that will give him “chills,” including a child between the ages of 8 and 11 that will play Michael Jackson.
Gordy and producers behind a just confirmed Broadway production titled “Motown: The Musical” launched a nationwide video search Tuesday.
“I’m not looking for imitators,” says Gordy. “What I’m looking for is people that are smart and can be themselves in the role. He has to be extremely talented, plus he has to give me the same chills that I got when I saw Michael Jackson in the first place.”
Gordy is also looking for talent that can take on the role of Stevie Wonder and himself in the upcoming production.
Scheduled to open Spring 2013, the show is written by Gordy with several songs lifted from the extensive Motown catalogue, including songs from Diana Ross and the Supremes, Smokey Robinson, The Temptations and Jackson.

Charles Randolph Wright will direct the production, tracing Gordy’s story as he assembled the legendary Motown roster of talent, building the Detroit music empire that crossed over to the mainstream.

Berry Gordy, the man behind Motown Records, is now looking for a young Michael Jackson to star in ‘Motown The Musical’. This opportunity of a lifetime will give one talented youngster the chance to show their stuff on stage and live out their dream as they take on the role of an iconic music legend. It’s no wonder why this news has sent fans into a frenzy! Read on to find out more about what it takes to be part of this thrilling production.

Motown The Musical is based on Berry Gordy’s autobiography ‘To Be Loved: The Music, The Magic, The Memories Of Motown’ and follows his incredible journey from boxer to legendary record producer. Alongside other classic acts such as Diana Ross & The Supremes, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Marvin Gaye and more, audiences will get to experience some of the most beloved songs from the golden age of music.

The lead role being casted by Gordy himself requires just the right amount of energy and charisma that only someone with exceptional singing and dance skills can bring. With so much talent out there vying for the coveted spot at centerstage, who knows where this search may lead?

Background On Berry Gordy

Berry Gordy was a legendary American record producer, songwriter and music mogul. He founded the iconic Motown Record Corporation in 1959 and is credited with launching some of the biggest musical acts in history. As well as founding this label, he also wrote and produced numerous hit songs for artists like The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson.

In 1971, Berry Gordy began his search for a young singer to be the next big star at Motown Records. After an extensive audition process, he found 11-year old Michael Jackson who made his debut on stage alongside Diana Ross during their performance of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”. From that moment onwards, Michael would become one of the biggest stars of all time – selling over 750 million records worldwide throughout his career.

Motown The Musical is based on this story — tracing Berry Gordy’s journey from featherweight boxer to heavyweight music mogul – while featuring classic hits such as “My Girl” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” which were popularised by Gordy’s artists during this era.

Casting For Motown The Musical

In order to bring the story of Berry Gordy and Motown Records to life on stage, casting for Motown The Musical began in 2012. Auditions were held throughout the US and Canada, with thousands of hopefuls attending open calls in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto and other cities.

The musical was looking for performers who could not only act but also sing and dance at a professional level — as well as embody the spirit of Motown’s stars. Through a rigorous audition process, talented actors like Brandon Victor Dixon (Berry Gordy) and Clifton Oliver (Smokey Robinson) were eventually chosen to headline the show.

Motown The Musical went on to become one of Broadway’s most successful shows – celebrating over 1,000 performances during its run from 2013-2015. With powerful performances by an exceptional cast that brought some of music’s greatest hits back to life onstage, it is no wonder audiences fell in love with this production all over again!

Conclusion

Berry Gordy, the legendary songwriter and producer behind Motown Records, has opened a search for young actors to portray Michael Jackson in Motown The Musical. It’s an exciting opportunity for aspiring performers who are looking to make their mark on Broadway.

As someone who has been deeply involved in music since he was a child himself, Berry Gordy understands the importance of finding talented kids from all walks of life. He wants these children to have the chance to share their talent with the world. By giving them this wonderful opportunity, he hopes they can spread joy through powerful performances that will reach millions of people around the globe.

Motown The Musical is sure to be one of the most talked-about shows on Broadway when it debuts. With Berry Gordy at its helm, it promises to be full of energy and emotion that only incredible young talents like those auditioning could bring alive on stage. So if you’re an aspiring actor or singer dreaming of your big break – this could just be your moment!
