A number of R&B/soul singers including Luke James, Kelly Price, and Stacy Francis have joined Chaka Khan on a just released song and video dedicated to the life of slain Florida teen Trayvon Martin.
Aptly titled “Fear Kills. Love Heals,” the effort is a re-cut of Chaka Khan’s song “Super Life.”
The song and video were recorded in Hollywood Sunday, put together within 48hrs notice to send a message Khan hopes will resonate with children, adults and the world at large.
“I really feel strongly about our children, period, and their safety. And this is children of every color. We’re concerned about children’s safety,” Khan told Piers Morgan Monday night.
A project completely from the heart, Khan went on to say this is not about money but is an effort “to raise awareness in children and adults and everybody that you can’t judge a person by what he’s wearing.”
With that said, Khan and talent like Eva Marcille, Loretta Devine, and Angela Bassett wear hoodies in the video. Showing solidarity, they pull off their hoods to reveal their faces and state their names.
The poignant message “Fear Kills. Love Heals.” closes out the video.
On February 26, 2012, the nation was shaken when an unarmed teenager named Trayvon Martin was shot and killed in Sanford, Florida. In response to this tragic event, a number of singers have come together with a powerful message: justice for Trayvon Martin. Luke James and Kelly Price are just two of these artists who are using their platform to spread awareness about police brutality and racial profiling. Through their music and activism, they hope that one day there will be true equality for all people. This article examines how Luke James and Kelly Price’s collaboration is uniting voices across generations to fight for justice.
From Grammy-winning R&B star Luke James’ “They Gon’ Wanna Come” featuring his mentor Beyoncé to multi-platinum selling artist Kelly Price’s recent single dedicated to Trayvon Martin called “Sing Pray Love,” both musicians have used their craft as a way to express their support for the movement against systemic racism and police violence. By collaborating on musical records that draw attention to injustice towards African Americans, they seek to create greater unity between communities nationwide while also encouraging others to join them in taking action against hate crimes such as those experienced by Trayvon Martin.
In addition to creating new songs about the tragedy of Trayvon Martin’s death, James and Price have worked hard in other ways including public service announcements, fundraising events, rallies, interviews, and more; all done with the goal of achieving justice not only for young black men like Trayvon but also extending equal rights protection under the law regardless of race or gender. Together they stand united in their mission: no one should ever again experience what happened eight years ago in Sanford, Florida on February 26th 2012.
Background Of The Movement
The movement to remember Trayvon Martin began after his senseless death in 2012. He was an unarmed 17-year-old African American boy who was fatally shot by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watchman. Aside from music, various organizations were founded such as the Trayvon Martin Foundation, which works to educate youth on how to interact peacefully with law enforcement and prevent similar tragedies from occurring again.
The impact of this movement has been far reaching; it has opened up conversations surrounding police brutality, racism and civil rights all over the world. It has also led to new legislation being passed including Florida’s Stand Your Ground Law being repealed in 2020 – making these issues more visible than ever before.
