The Queen of Hip Hop Soul, Ms. Mary J. Blige, continued to exemplify her talent as a timeless artist while at Oakland’s Fox Theater on Friday, November 11th , 2011. The singer captivated her audience with her vocal prowess and heartfelt passion from beginning to end as she performed the critically acclaimed 1994 classic ‘My Life’ album. It was simply an elegant night filled with music, dancing, memories, love, and soul.
Donning a white and brown cat-suit with thigh high boots and sunglasses, Mary J stepped out on stage with a live band and three backing vocalists. She had the venue grooving to all her hits, including “Be Happy,” “Mary Jane (All Night Long),” and “You Bring Me Joy.” Moving with ease across the stage, she greeted her audience with vigor and kept the energy high, dancing throughout the entire show. Not missing a single beat or step, Mary hit all her high notes effortlessly, as the grown and sexy crowd sang along word-for-word. However, it was when “I’m Goin’ Down” came on that the entire Fox Theater went crazy with thunderous cheers as everyone in that room belted out the lyrics to the classic song.
There is no doubt that Mary J. Blige is one of the greatest singers of this generation, and an icon in redefining R&B/Soul music in the past two decades. With Grammy awards, #1 albums, and several multi-platinum records under her belt, she does not look to slow down in the least bit.
On November 21st, 2011, Mary will be releasing her tenth studio album entitled ‘My Life II… The Journey Continues (Act 1),’ which has been dubbed as the sequel to her 1994 breakthrough album. With singles “The Living Proof” and “25/8” steadily climbing up the charts, she looks to have another hit record on her hands. And judging by her strong stage presence and ability to command the crowd with ease, Mary is the total package. She is indeed a true testament to star power.
