Biography

Slakah the Beatchild is a Canadian musician, composer, producer and songwriter. Born in Toronto in 1979, he was raised by his single mother who encouraged him to pursue music from an early age. He has been making beats since he was 15 years old, and producing hip-hop tracks as part of underground collectives for over two decades. Slakah’s sound is rooted in soul and R&B with jazz influences; it has been described as “cinematic” and praised for its emotive qualities.

His debut solo album The Cure Music was released in 2005 to critical acclaim. It featured guest appearances from some of Canada’s most talented artists like Drake, K’naan, Saukrates and Divine Brown. The record blended elements of modern hip hop production with classic samples taken from obscure vinyl records that Slakah had collected throughout his career. His creative approach earned him respect among fans and industry alike – it spawned multiple singles including “Soul Movement”, which reached number 1 on the MuchMusic Hip Hop chart.

The success of The Cure Music allowed Slakah to tour extensively across Canada and Europe while continuing to produce other artists’ albums such as Drake’s mixtape So Far Gone (2009). In 2011, he returned with another full-length release titled Soul Movement Vol 2: All Of My Friends Are Here which included collaborations with Common Market, Zion I & BJ The Chicago Kid amongst others. Since then, Slakah continues to write new music while playing live shows around the world – proving himself once again as one of Canada’s finest musical talents.

Discography

Building on the success of his debut album The Cure Music, Slakah has released an impressive discography over the last 15 years. He continues to produce and collaborate with some of Canada’s biggest names in music, as well as crafting his own solo works. Here we take a look at some of Slakah’s most important releases since 2005.

The first is Soul Movement Vol 2: All Of My Friends Are Here (2011). This record was issued by BBE Records and featured collaborations with Common Market, Zion I & BJ The Chicago Kid amongst others. It showcased Slakah’s growing production chops and mastery of soulful beats; leading single “Love Is” received radio airplay across North America.

Following this release was ‘A Matter Of Time’ (2013), where he explored a more cinematic soundscape backed up by lush orchestration – making it his most ambitious project yet. Then came ‘Beatchild & The Slakadeliqs’, which saw him teaming up with instrumentalist Adria Kain for an eclectic mix of jazz-influenced soul jams that earned them international acclaim and appearances on popular late night shows like Conan O’Brien.

Slakah has continued to make waves ever since, releasing three full-length projects between 2015-2018 including ‘Something Forever’, which spawned multiple singles such as ‘To Love Somebody’ and ‘Let You Go’. Ultimately, these records have cemented Slakah’s reputation as one of Canada’s most accomplished producers – creating timeless music that speaks to many generations around the world.
