Amongst the friends and family visiting new mom Mariah Carey in the hospital this week, one visitor was very unexpected – a social worker. According to her husband Nick Cannon, the social worker was investigating a claim that Carey was abusing her newborns by consuming alcohol and drugs while breastfeeding.
In a Thursday night appearance on CNN, Cannon said a nurse suggested that Carey drink a small amount of dark beer to help with breastfeeding. He speculates that someone overheard the conversation and in an effort to profit from the alleged abuse, tried to sell the story to tabloids.
“Child protective services were called with allegations that, you know, there was some drinking and drugs and all that going on while in the hospital, which again makes no sense to me,” Cannon told CNN’s Piers Morgan during the interview. “Like, how would a hospital even allow that?”
He goes on to tell Morgan, “I guess someone maybe overheard that (suggestion), and this is a good way to make a quick buck, or call the tabloids.” Cannon ends with, “It’s kind of sad that people think that we’ll make money off of these newborns.”
