Soul/R&B singer Kem has been magical in 2010. He released his third studio album âIntimacy: Album IIIâ in August, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, his highest-charting effort ever. The set is lead by the popular first single âWhy Would You Stay,â which peaked at number 19 and 14 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs and Heatseekers charts respectively. âThe release of my third album ‘Intimacy’ was my most memorable moment in 2010,â Kem tells Singersroom, who also says he had “no regrets.” Kem also co-headlined the 2010 Budweiser Superfest tour with Anthony Hamilton, which also included Jaheim, Raheem DeVaughn, and newcomer Hal Linton. Continuing the momentum into 2011, Kem says, âWeâre getting prepared to go back out on the road and do a 26-30 city tour in February.â Adding, âweâre working on a new fragrance, weâre working with the Tom Joyner Foundationâ¦Iâm sponsoring a room on the upper deck of the boat in March (2011). Weâre bringing all these young up and coming R&B artists; the hottest acts, itâs called âSoul Exposedâ and weâre just continuing to keep soul music alive. Kem, who is an advocate for uplifting others, also spoke on Chris Brown regaining his notoriety. âI donât think that our failures are final and we all should have an opportunity to recover from our mistakes, so I wish him well,â Kem tells Singersroom. âHeâs a young brother, heâs very talented, he has his whole life a head of him and my only hope is that heâs learned from the experience and that heâs better for it.â Outside of music Kem says heâs âchilling.â Adding, âIâm a dad so I chill with my kids, I like movies, I like to eat, you know I got a fat person living inside of me (laughter), so I just take it easy; life is good.â
As we enter 2011, we can’t help but think about what the new year will bring. For singer/songwriter Kem, it’s a time of reflection on 2010 and anticipation for the future. In this exclusive Singersroom interview, he talks candidly about his plans for 2011 as well as his thoughts on Chris Brown, life without music and more. Read on to find out what Kem had to say in our 2010 Rewind series.
Kem has been making waves with fans since 2003 when his debut album “Kemistry” was released. With its soulful ballads and smooth R&B grooves, it quickly became an instant classic among contemporary jazz lovers everywhere. Since then, he’s toured extensively throughout North America and Europe, gained two Grammy nominations and collaborated with some of music’s biggest names including Mary J Blige and Snoop Dogg.
When asked about 2011 plans, Kem revealed that he’ll be heading back into the studio soon to work on material for his upcoming fourth album release scheduled later in the year. He also shared a few comments on Chris Brown’s recent troubles saying “His actions were wrong but I hope people don’t forget that there is still good in him – because no matter how big you get or how much success you have; at the end of the day we’re all human beings.” Get ready for another great year for Kem!
Reflections On 2010
As we come to the end of another year, it’s a time for reflection on all that has happened in 2010. Looking back at the ups and downs, there are moments I’m proud of and some that could have gone better. But overall, I’m grateful for how far I’ve come and what experiences this year has brought me.
One thing that stands out is my music career. Even though I released two albums this year, both had their own unique challenges. From marketing and promotion to getting radio play, each step was an adventure that pushed me further as an artist. On top of that, having the chance to collaborate with other artists like Chris Brown was such an incredible experience.
I couldn’t be more excited about what 2011 holds either! There will be plenty of new music coming soon and lots of opportunities to reach even more fans around the world. It’s amazing to think about where life without music would take me – but luckily I never have to find out!
Aspirations For 2011
Going into the new year, I’m eager to keep learning and growing as an artist. With each new project, my goal is always to deliver something that fans can connect with on a deeper level. Whether it’s through lyrics or production, I want people to be able to feel something when they listen.
I also plan to take more risks musically in 2011. It can be easy to stick with what you know, but part of growth involves trying new ideas and experimenting with different styles and sounds. There are so many possibilities out there – why not explore them?
As for collaborations, I look forward to having the chance to work with other musicians who share similar visions and beliefs as me. Music should never just be about creating hit songs; it should also serve as a platform for collaboration between artists from all walks of life. Here’s hoping that this dream becomes a reality!
