While the BET Awards have been recognized for putting together a host of amazing performances in year’s past, including the pairing of TLC, EnVogue, Alicia Keys and SWV as well as Jennifer Hudson and Jennifer Holliday, organizers of the annual celebration have come under fire in recent years for failing to present a positive event. With nominees and performers announced Tuesday, May 18, controversy over the show has reignited with not just performers but nominees under attack. It’s no secret that BET attempted the unthinkable by scrapping a show planned for weeks, if not months, to pay tribute to late entertainer Michael Jackson in 2009. Depending on who you ask, that decision was either good or terrible. But, that decision was not the talk of the net when the show ended. That honor went to Lil Wayne’s profanity filled performance of “Everygirl” with his daughter and her friends dancing on stage. Sparking heavy debate, the performance ended up being addressed by Columbia University clinical instructor Dr. Janet Taylor: “Perhaps, they are what our kids are used to. I have teenagers, girls no less, who have heard the song and like it,â Taylor told MomLogic.com while referencing the songâs lyrics. âMy problem was with the preteens who were proudly onstage, shaking their groove thang to this misogynistic, disrespectful song. It was ridiculous. Debra Lee, the CEO of BET, also the mother of two children, should be asking herself who approved this and how these young girls were allowed to be a part of this ‘act.'” Due to the performance and debatable overall presentation of the 2009 ceremony some have sworn off supporting the 2010 BET Awards telecast, calling the just announced line-up and nominees the “same ol'” trick. Despite the controversy BET did switch a few things up this year, including the return of the Best Female Hip Hop Artist category (while debatable); a Best International Act award; and the introduction of the Centric Award (likely a replacement of the BET J Cool Like That Award). In addition to that however, one nominee in particular has people up in arms over how he was nominated while others were not — we’re talking about Justin Bieber. While his success with “My World 2.0” is undeniable, is he really nominated for a BET Award in the Best New Artist category ? BET exec Stephen Hill, picking up on the controversial nomination, has already defended the nomination, stating: “Bieber has crossed the colour boundaries the same way that hip-hop has crossed the boundaries the other way for a number of years. He’s had rhythm in his music. He makes the type of music our audience likes.” But what about Lady Gaga ? Has Lady Gaga not crossed over ‘colour boundaries’ and become an artist worthy of nominations beyond her collaboration with Beyonce on “Video Phone” ? Nonetheless, the 2010 BET Awards are slated to air Sunday, June 27, 2010 on BET. The question is, will you be watching ?
The BET Awards are known for honoring the best in music, movies and sports. But this year, controversy has been swirling around the awards show like never before. From its host selection to criticisms of certain performances, it’s clear that not everyone is happy with how things have gone down at the 2010 BET Awards. So as we move into an uncertain future with the awards show, one question remains: will you watch?
The 2010 BET Awards certainly did not lack drama or controversy. The choice of actor-comedian Kevin Hart to host was met with much criticism from fans who felt he wasn’t qualified or experienced enough to handle such a prestigious event. Furthermore, many people were unhappy with some of the musical performances on display throughout the night; Nicki Minaj’s performance in particular was seen by some as too risqué for network TV.
In addition to these controversies, there has also been discussion about whether or not hip hop stars should be allowed to perform their more explicit lyrics on live television during family viewing hours. All these issues add up to create a confusing picture regarding what viewers can expect from future editions of the award show – if there even is one! Only time will tell if these controversies will spell doom for the BET Awards or just another chance for improvement and growth.
History Of Bet Awards
The BET Awards have been a staple in the entertainment industry for over two decades. The awards, which recognize artists of color from music, film, and television, first aired live in 2001. Since then, they’ve become one of the most highly viewed events on cable television every year.
Despite its popularity with viewers, however, the show has had its fair share of controversies throughout the years. From accusations of racism to performances that were deemed inappropriate by many viewers, there’s never a lack of drama surrounding the event.
This year is no different; 2010 promises to be another exciting installment in what has become an annual tradition of award shows and controversy. Whether you plan on tuning in or not, it looks like this year won’t disappoint when it comes to big names and even bigger conversations about race and representation in media.
Public Reactions To Controversy
As the controversy has continued to surround the show in recent years, public opinion has been divided on whether it’s worth watching or not. Some argue that despite its shortcomings, BET Awards is still one of the few awards shows that celebrates Black excellence and provides a platform for diverse voices to be heard. Others contend that until real changes are made at the network level, it’s hypocritical to continue tuning in year after year.
The debate rages on as this year’s ceremony approaches, with many people taking to social media to weigh in on both sides of the issue. While some viewers have denounced any plans to watch due to what they perceive from previous incidents, others are more optimistic about potential improvements being made behind-the-scenes.
No matter where you stand on the topic, one thing is certain: The BET Awards will remain a source of discussion and scrutiny among fans and critics alike — even if viewership numbers don’t reflect it.
Conclusion
The BET Awards have had a long and storied history, but the controversy surrounding them continues to this day. From allegations of racism to accusations of sexism, it’s clear that there are still major issues with how these awards are handled. While some viewers may choose not to watch due to their dissatisfaction with the show, others will continue tuning in for the performances, celebrity appearances, and overall entertainment value.
It remains unclear what changes if any will be made in response to the public outcry over the past several years. But one thing is certain: no matter what happens at this year’s ceremony, people will be paying attention—and likely voicing their opinions about whatever decisions or actions take place during the live broadcast.
My own opinion? I’ll definitely be watching — as someone who loves music and television, I can’t pass up an opportunity like this! Though I’m aware of all the problems associated with these awards shows, I think it’s important to support artists who work hard despite those challenges. So even though there might be more than enough reasons to stay away from this particular event, I won’t let anything stop me from enjoying every moment of it.
