After Mariah Carey gave a performance of “Stay In Love” and Pink’s “Sobering’ set was over, Chris Brown, Rihanna and Kanye West walked away as the top winners at Sunday’s American Music Awards. Brown and Rihanna, who both admitted their wins were ‘surprising,’ beat out veteran R&B stars Usher and Mary J. Blige respectively by taking home two of three Soul/R&B awards. In fact the only other R&B star to take home an award was Alicia Keys, who won Favorite Pop/Rock album for “As I Am,” besting the likes of Coldplay and the Eagles. On the Hip Hop side, Kanye West won two of three Rap/Hip Hop Awards beating out Lil Wayne, who West said was more deserving of the award: “I got my opinion. And I want to give this award to Wayne, for this year. If it was last year, this would have been my award. This year’s Wayne award; we’ll see what happens next year.” Check out the full list of winners below: POP/ROCK CATEGORIES Favorite Male Artist: Chris Brown Favorite Female Artist: Rihanna Favorite Band, Duo or Group: Daughtry Favorite Album: “As I Am” Alicia Keys RAP/HIP-HOP Favorite Band, Duo or Group: Three 6 Mafia Favorite Male Artist: Kanye West Favorite Album: “Graduation” Kanye West ADULT CONTEMPORARY Favorite Artist: Jordin Sparks SOUL/R&B Favorite Male Artist: Chris Brown Favorite Female Artist: Rihanna Favorite Album: “As I Am” Alicia Keys LATIN Favorite Artist: Enrique Iglesias ALTERNATIVE Favorite Artist: Linkin Park T – Mobile FAVORITE BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST Jonas Brothers COUNTRY Favorite Male Artist: Brad Paisley Favorite Female Artist: Taylor Swift Favorite Band, Duo or Group: Rascal Flatts Favorite Album: “Carnival Ride” Carrie Underwood
