R&B singer Estelle picked up a nomination for Britainâs esteemed Mercury Prize this week. According to recent reports, the âAmerican Boyâ singer is in the running to receive the coveted award which was short-listed this week from 240 eligible albums by British artists to 12 nominated albums. Estelleâs âShineâ will square off with Adele who has also become an international star with the hit album â19â. Other nominees for the award which celebrates the best in music from British acts include Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Laura Marling and Radiohead. According to Billboard, Mercury judges will select their album of the year from the shortlist at a ceremony held in London Sept. 9. The ceremony, which will feature live performances from various nominees, will be announced live on national TV channel BBC 2, which will also broadcast the awards show on Sept. 12. The shortlist was praised in a rare joint statement by U.K. labels bodies BPI and the Association of Independent Music. According to BPI chairman Tony Wadsworth, it is “a great snapshot of our current vibrant music scene and the rich choice available to music fans.”
