Continuing our celebration of Black Music Month, this week’s featured moments are dedicated to the best chart topping, record breaking, and soul stirring R&B/Soul singers from Whitney and Mary to Aretha and Chaka. Plus get the lowdown on the latest news and upcoming projects from each featured Diva. Chaka Khan – “ I Feel For You” Not one to stay in one lane or in a box, throughout her career Chaka Khan has recorded and performed funk, disco, jazz, R&B, hip hop, pop and blues. Khan reached a peak in 1984 when she recorded a cover of Prince’s 1979 song “I Feel For You.” Once released in 1984, the single stormed the charts becoming Khan’s biggest single to date. Although there were many versions of song, including the most popular featuring Stevie Wonder, the official record sold well over 1 million copies in the U.S. and in the United Kingdom where it became a #1 single on the UK charts. “I Feel For You” a spirited record featuring rapper Melle Mel, keyboard and guitar by The System and harmonica playing and sampling from Wonder peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 that year at the same time holding on to the top spot on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart where it remained for three consecutive weeks. Khan’s single became such a hit that she titled her solo effort “I Feel For You,” which after it’s release toward the end of 1984 went platinum. “I Feel For You” also earned Chaka Khan her fifth Grammy at the time, Khan has earned a total of 10 Grammy Awards since. Today: Chaka Khan is currently celebrating her 35th anniversary in the business this year with a World Tour slated to run through August. Khan will also perform at Saturday’s Songs of Soul and Inspiration as previously reported by Singersroom, also featuring performances and appearances from Cece Winans, Shirley Caesar, Dionne Warwick, Yolanda Adams and more. For more on Chaka Khan’s tour please visit her official website (chakakhan.com). Chaka Khan has left a defined imprint on the music industry and pop culture in general, her records have been covered by greats such as Whitney Houston and Kanye West, tell us what your favorite Chaka Khan records are ? (Here are a few of her most known hits : I’m Every Woman, I Feel For You, Through The Fire, Eye To Eye, Disrespectful, Angel, One For All Time, Ain’t Nobody, Tell Me Something Good, and Sweet Thing)
