On August 22, R&B star Usher will make his Broadway debut in the Tony Award-winning revival of Chicago. He’ll play the role of Billy Flynn for six weeks, before wrapping up performances on October 1. Usher released a statement that said, “This is a very exciting time in my career. I have always admired Broadway actors for their showmanship; dedication and focus that goes into performing live on stage every night. Being on Broadway allows you to connect to audiences in a whole new way that’s different from music and movies. When they asked me to play Billy Flynn in Chicago, I jumped at the chance to be a part of such an amazing production.” Usher has vowed to continue acting, despite the failure of movie IN THE MIX, his first big screen lead role. The 2005 film was slated by critics and performed poorly at the box office. But the singer refuses to give up. He tells the New York Daily News, “I didn’t really have any thoughts on that other than the reality of it. Every time you put out an album – or put out anything – you hope that it’s going to be as successful as possible. “I could view it as an accomplishment – there are many people who never get a chance to act in anything. But every film an actor does (can’t be) a blockbuster. So you know, I guess I got to get back up there and continue to do it.” The Disabilities and Special Needs Board of Clarendon, SC recently honored R&B singer and songwriter Ne-Yo. He was awarded a plaque for his humanitarian work, while he met and greeted the staff and workers. David Baker, the executive director of DSNB, put the informal event together. Baker was quoted about the event saying, “It’s all an effort to keep the staff healthy. It breeds camaraderie.” Danity Kane, an all-female group put together by Diddy on MTV’s “Making of the Band,” will release their self-titled debut album this week. R&B artist Kelis will celebrate her birthday today Aug. 21, and then she will release her latest album, “Kelis Was Here,” tomorrow Aug. 22.
